Learn what the benefits of Micro-needling are from a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.
Everyone wants glowing, beautiful, flawless skin like these beauties. But what are the best state-of-the-art treatments for perfect ageless skin? It seems like there are so many options and treatments it's overwhelming to decide what to do. Ideally, you would want something long lasting, with little or no pain, no side effects, for all skin types and ages, no downtime, and not crazy expensive. Does such a treatment exist?
I think micro-needling fits the bill! Micro-needling became popularized by Kim Kardashian and the famous so-called "vampire facelift" selfie showing Kim with a very bloody face post micro-needing and PRP (platelet rich plasma) treatment.
First off, I approach every new treatment and beauty fad with caution and skepticism. I am not going to offer something to my patients and friends that I have not researched and vetted. Safety and efficacy are key ingredients to any treatment. I either personally try a treatment myself, or have a trusted colleague try new treatments to vouch for them. I first read all that I can that is scientific on a treatment or product, and then if it holds promise, I try it in some fashion, and then decide yeah or nay. With this treatment, I personally have not undergone it, but I performed it on trusted colleagues who had measurable improvement in their skin quality and texture and tone!
What is micro-needling? It is a facial treatment that uses a tiny wand of oscillating needles that touch the skin and cause a micro-injury.
Think of it like a topical rejuvenation for your skin, that is a combination of exfoliating the top layer of skin, and aerating the deeper layers, much like you do a golf course. This does two things - it allows for collagen to be stimulated and allows for damaged skin, blemishes, fine lines to be erased. The wand of tiny needles is passed over the skin, and then when the micro-injury is created topical agents can be placed on the skin to augment the process. For example PRP, like Kim Kardashian had and Hyaluronic Acid serum among others. The topical agents are used to enhance the treatment for specific purposes; dry skin, blemishes, wrinkles, etc.
The treatment takes about 45 minutes - 30 minutes to "numb" with a topical agent and then 15 minutes to perform the treatment. After the face feels numb, it should not be a painful procedure. Recovery is quick and easy. Usually 1 day of down time due to redness, and then a few days where the skin is a little sensitive but "presentable". This treatment is good for all ages, all skin colors, and all men and women (all men and women, cis/trans)! Full effect is usually 2-4 weeks post treatment, and lasts....The treatment changes the skin and improves both quality and texture, so it lasts forever.
